TGIF: Saxcess

  • Wellington Cathedral of St Paul 2 Hill Street Wellington, Wellington, 6011 New Zealand (map)

For over 30 years, Saxcess has been Aotearoa’s premier saxophone quartet. They have enjoyed sold-out shows across the motu, playing music spanning swing, classical, and cutting-edge New Zealand contemporary, and bringing the joy and dynamism of the beloved saxophone to their delighted audiences.

Lead by soprano sax Debbie Rawson, the group will present a kaleidoscope of colourful works from New Zealand composers and arrangers such as Gareth Farr, Anton Wuts, Peter Liley, and Karlo Margetić.

Rawson will be joined by alto sax Mark Cookson, tenor sax Franz Ombler, and baritone sax Rachel Collingridge.

True to Saxcess’s diverse musical tastes, the audience can expect a hot tango, a wild trip down a bat cave, a thrilling journey through Eastern Europe, an arresting Klezmer dance, a deep dive to oceanic depths, a drunken quartet of Balkan revellers, and a few old favourites from Erik Satie, a movie soundtrack, and more.

Since their debut at the Sydney Opera House in 1992, Saxcess has enjoyed both national and international success. Described by the Sydney Morning Herald as “one of New Zealand’s greatest musical exports”, they’ve toured with the Royal New Zealand Ballet, the New Zealand String Quartet, premiered New Zealand composers’ work at international saxophone congresses, and featured at major arts festivals.
