The Commemorative Tower foundation stone, unveiled by Queen Elizabeth II on November 5 1995, is inset into a pillar outside the Cathedral’s main entrance.
The Cathedral’s Consecration Stone was unveiled by Queen Elizabeth II, and blessed by the Right Reverend Dr. Thomas Brown, Tenth Bishop of Wellington on 24 February 2002.
Gargoyles and Chimera on the outside of the building depict birds, animals and people, cast in concrete by Wellington sculptor J A McCready. A gargoyle is a carved figure on the outside of buildings that works as a waterspout, while Chimera are also carved figures but are ornamental only. Some of the people are said to be well known Wellington personalities of the time, including Bishop Baines.
