With readings, prayers and music for the centenary of Armistice Day.
Pausing at 10.50am for the 100 gun salute, two minutes silence and joining the Roaring Chorus with a celebratory quarter peal by the Cathedral bell ringers.
This is to echo the thanksgiving and jubilation that erupted across Aotearoa as word of the Armistice reached our shores 100 years ago. The Evening Post described the scene in Wellington: “There were songs and cheers, miscellaneous pipings and blastings, and tootings and rattlings—a roaring chorus of gladsome sounds.” Similar noisy outpourings of joy and relief were reported across the country.
Please bring bells, horns, drums, whistles, sirens, and your best voices as we aim to recapture this moment, and the bell ringers do their bit.
Music by Henry Walford Davies - his Short Requiem, written in 1915, John Tavener's Exhortation for Double Choir to Laurence Binyon's poem 'For the Fallen' and the newly written Hymn of Peace by Ally Barrett.
Music: The Cathedral Choir.
Preacher: The Dean, the Very Reverend David Rowe.
All are welcome - and bring an instrument for the Roaring Chorus.
